A Pair of Chinese Lacquer Horseshoe Chairs
China, circa 1930

A fine pair of Chinese lacquer horseshoe chairs. The black lacquer ground highlighted with gilt decoration of mythical dragons and birds amongst swirling clouds and an abstracted landscape.

The Chinese name for this type of chair is quanyi, which translates to ‘chair with a circular back’ or ‘circle chair.’ These chairs date back at least 500 years. The English term comes from a reference to the overall shape of the back and arm rests that resemble a horeshoe. The back rail and arms of the chair form a continuous semicircle and gentle descend toward to the front.
