A WILLIAM AND MARY BLACK JAPANNED CABINET
English, circa 1680

A superb and rare William and Mary black japanned cabinet on chest; richly decorated throughout in raised japanned gilt chinoiserie decoration on a black ground; with figures, birds, pagodas, trees and mythical creatures; the upper section with a moulded twin-arched pediment surmounted by turned urn finials and with two large doors enclosing a variety of different sized drawers similarly decorated; the doors externally centred by a large scrolling engraved gilt brass escutcheon and hung by similar strap hinges; the base comprising a pair of short drawers over two long drawers; the whole standing on bun feet.
