A GEORGE III MAHOGANY POLE SCREEN
English, circa 1770

A fine and rare George III mahogany pole screen in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, the rectangular mahogany framed screen enclosing to the front a panel of period needlework, and to the reverse an original panel of period Chinese wallpaper, the whole supported on a pole surmounted by a turned and gadrooned finial, on a very finely turned and carved base with three exaggerated scroll legs terminating in fine scroll and block feet.

Height: 60 in (152.5 cm)
Width of screen: 21 ½ in (54.5 cm)
Height of screen: 23 in (58.5 cm)

Note: Replacements to the frame of the screen. The needlework replaced but period.

Related pieces: Thomas Chippendale is known to have regularly supplied related mahogany polescreen with a combination of needlework or tapestry and Chinese wallpaper to many of his clients; including those supplied to Blair Castle, Dumfries House, Newby Hall and Harewood. The treatment of the knees and feet of the tri-partite base of the present screen relates very closely to a pair of candlestands supplied by Chippendale to Paxton House.
