A GEORGE III SUPPER TABLE
English, circa 1750

A rare and very charming George II mahogany supper table with single drop leaf to the rear, of outstanding colour and patina throughout, standing on four elegant yet bold cabriole legs terminating in spade pad feet; the front and sides interestingly pierced with early chinoiserie fretwork decoration. Designed to stand against a wall, and then to be brought forward when required; the flap leaf can then be raised and held up by one of the rear cabriole legs operating on a gate-leg mechanism, doubling the flat surface area of the table. The fretwork borders to the front and sides are an early indication of the chinoiserie decoration and the mania for all things Oriental that was going to take the English decorative arts and interior decoration by storm during the 1760s.
