The picture shows Mr Robert Pigott's famous horse Shark beating Lord Abingdon's Leviathan over the Beacon course at Newmarket
for 1,000 guineas on 5 April 1777. Shark conceded 7lbs and scored one of his nineteen victories. The horses had met in 1776 (Shark
won again that time). However, we know this is the 1777 race since Pigott had changed his colours from 'Pink' to what was called 'Bloom
colour, with Green cap'. Lord Abingdon had 'Blue & White stripes' for both matches.
