Culzean Castle, overlooking the Firth of Clyde, was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century for the 10th Earl of Cassilis on the site of the tower house dating to the 1400s. In addition to designing its impressive exterior, Adam designed the interiors of the castle as well, including the grand oval staircase and the furnishings. The castle has been part of the National Trust for Scotland since 1945.
