Oval Pembroke tables with a central patera and husk decoration were a type popularised by the designs of George Hepplewhite in the concluding two decades of the 18th century (cf. Hepplewhite and Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer’s Guide, 3rd ed., 1794, pl. 59 and 62).

Two tables with virtually identical inlaid decoration were sold: Sotheby’s New Bond Street, 10 April 1972, lot 64 (from the collection of the Countess of Dysart) and 24 April 1998, lot 101 (illustrated on the cover of the catalogue). A further comparable table was with Norman Adams and illustrated in The Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair Handbook, 12 – 21 June 1997, pp. 90 – 91.
