A PAIR OF GEORGE II WALNUT STOOLS

An exceptionally rare and fine pair of George II walnut stools, with elegant cabriole legs carved with shells at the knee and fine lappet strapwork detailing, with pad feet, with drop-in seats. The carving of superb quality - the colour and patina of the walnut excellent. In remarkably original condition, retaining their original drop-in seats. The pad cushions upholstered with wonderful French early 18th century needlework panels worked in silks with a profusion of flowers and leaves issuing from twisted branches on an ivory cream background.

The original drop-in seat frames are numbered "III" and 'IV', which suggests these stools were a set of at least four. At least one stool was part of the celebrated Percival Griffiths collection and illustrated in R. W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, p. 159, fig .109. Two single stools from this set are recorded in private collections; the other two, are offered here as a pair.
