A magnificent and highly important pair of George III giltwood armchairs. Each with an oval shield shaped back and serpentine fronted seat, both upholstered, and with magnificent carved giltwood show frames. The backs with carved lions masks flanked by acanthus decoration, the arms adorned with drapery or fringed pelts which end in lion head terminals, beautifully carved, on acanthus decorated supports. The front seat rail is carved to the centre with a satyr mask, again flanked by acanthus detailing. The front legs square and tapering carved with paterae and trailing husks within fielded panels, with block feet terminating in carved balls. The back legs outswept. With exposed strut to the reverse of the seat back.
