A PAIR OF WILLIAM AND MARY ARMCHAIRS

england , circa 1680

A very fine and rare pair of William and Mary period carved walnut high back armchairs. With caned backs and seats. Each back with carved border frame surmounted by an elaborate carved cresting centred on a portrait medallion. With bold outswept arms with carved detail, standing on turned carved baluster legs joined by shaped finial mounted cross-stretchers. The caned seat fitted with silk velvet cushions.

These magnificent chairs were exhibited at Olympia in 1928, Exhibition of Antiques - shown by Messrs. Howard and Sons Ltd., of 23 Berners Street, London W1 - as part of the reconstructed dining room of Streatlam Castle, co. Durham: 'this noble room will also be shown as a true period interior by being adorned by the finest specimens of Early English furniture'.
