These chairs, originally forming part of a larger suite, were part of the celebrated collections of Frank Green at the Treasurer’s House in York. The property was built on the site of what had originally been the official residence of the Treasurers of York Minster – an office that was abolished in 1574 as a result of the Reformation. Frank Green, a member of a rich industrialist family and an antiquarian, bought the property in 1897 and restored it back to its former glory and filled it with his collection. On his retirement in 1930 he left the house and much of its contents to the National Trust.
