A PAIR OF GEORGE II ARMCHAIRS

england , circa 1755

A very fine pair of George II mahogany armchairs in the rococo taste.  The shaped backs, seats and arm-rests upholstered. The cabriole legs and knurled feet with foliate carved cabochons, the plain rear cabrioles of bold form, with curvilinear slightly channelled  seat rails styled with rococo scrolls. incised lines and gadrooning centred on acanthus scrolls, twisted scrolled elbow with further foliate carving, the feet with concealed castors.

A pair from this suite is in the collections at Temple Newsam, Leeds and illustrated in C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, 1978,p. 90, fig. 77, given by a Mrs. A. Cooke in 1965 in memory of her husband Alf Cooke and her son Lt. Alfred Cooke.
