GILLOWS

england , circa 1780-1800

Attributed to Gillows

A very fine pair of George III late 18th century Hepplewhite period carved mahogany armchairs. In the neo-classical taste, with particularly fine carved detail throughout. The shield shaped backs each with mahogany showframe and brass buttoned dark green leather upholstery above a serpentine shaped seat similarly upholstered. The carved arms with upholstered pads and carved acanthus detailing to the handrests and reeded uprights with scrolled ends. The back supports, very unusually, superbly carved. Standing on tapering reeded front legs headed by carved patera and acanthus leaf collars and similarly detailed toes. The rear legs outswept.

Of generous proportions - a larger scale than usual. The carving of very fine quality and the mahogany with excellent colour and patina.
