A George I Burr Walnut Bureau Cabinet

An exceptional George I walnut and parcel gilt bureau cabinet. The molded broken arched cornice with carved giltwood finials above two conforming doors, opening to reveal pigeonholes, niches, and drawers, centred by a small cupboard with beveled mirrored door that conceals secret drawers, the slant font opening to reveal a writing surface and interior with further drawers and pigeonholes, the base with three short and three long feather banded figured drawers and supported on bracket feet. Retaining the original metalwork.

This cabinet features burr walnut veneers of the finest quality with feather banding and fine cross mouldings. The interior is constructed of wainscot oak, a particularly type of oak noted for its fine grain and lack of imperfections. This type of oak had to be imported from the Baltic.
