CHIPPENDALE: A PAIR OF GEORGE III PARCEL GILT ARMCHAIRS

A very fine pair of late 18th century George III Adam period neo-classical parcel-gilt armchairs. The square backs and seats with white painted and gilded show-frames decorated throughout with rope-twist detailing, acanthus leaves, trailing harebells, paterae and beading. Standing on four tapering fluted legs. Upholstered in Fortuny fabric.
These chairs are probably by Thomas Chippendale. The attribution can be made on the basis of very close comparison to a set of fourteen armchairs supplied by Chippendale circa 1779 for the White Drawing Room at Harewood House (see: C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, vol. II, p. 114, pl. 199).
