A CHIPPENDALE PERIOD OVERMANTEL MIRROR

england , circa 1770

A fine mid 18th century George III Chippendale carved giltwood overmantel mirror, the original silvered oval plate within a pierced and carved giltwood frame made and ornamented with C scrolls, foliage and seed husks, surmounted by an inverted open rose bloom.

The lightness and charm of the frame design, uncluttered by an over-abundance of decoration, is typical of the third quarter of the 18th Century, reflecting the move away fromthe extreme swirls and scrolls of the more fanciful rococo to the calmer more balanced approach of neo-classicism.
