The design of these chairs relates very closely to examples supplied by the leading London firm of Ince & Mayhew, with their magnificent fan carved backs and elegant restrained seats and tapering legs in the neo-classical taste. A virtually identical pair of chairs is photographed in the entrance hall of Powerscourt, County Wicklow, Ireland, seat of the Viscounts Powerscourt, and subsequently the Slazenger family. A very closely related set of four chairs was supplied to Richard Myddelton, circa 1782, for Chirk Castle, North Wales.
