A highly important pair of George II armorial painted hall chairs from the collections of the Earls of Scarsdale, Sutton Scarsdale.
Of sgabello form, painted moss green throughout with architectural detail picked out in cream highlights, the backs painted with the crest of Nicholas Leke, 4th Earl of Scarsdale, the seats with re-rentrant corners and a gently hollowed circle to the centre.

Four chairs from this suite were advertised in the Magazine Antiques in April 1960, p.319
A very closely related set of George II painted hall chairs was supplied to Peregrine Hyde Osborne, 3rd Duke of Leeds (1691 - 1731) or his son Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds (1713 - 1789), likely for either Kiveton Hall, Yorkshire or their house at Wimbledon. It is entirely likely that they were commissioned by the 4th Duke, perhaps in celebration of his elevation to the Dukedom in 1731. They passed through family descent to Francis Osborne, 6th Duke of Leeds at Hornby Castle. They were subsequently in the celebrated collection of Basil and Nellie Ionides at Buxted Park, Sussex.
A further related set of eighteen chairs, of this 'sgabello' form, was supplied by George Nix to the Countess of Dysart and the Earl of Lauderdale at Ham House in 1730. These chairs are painted with the Tollemache family coat of arms.
